Time just seems to be flying, which I'm putting down to life being rather lovely. I've just said goodbye to a surprise visitor who dropped by for a long weekend. A friend from crafting circles in Wellington who I spent an enjoyable few day sight seeing and generally just chilling and playing hooky with, mostly at the lovely beaches around Dunedin. Kate is an excellant cook and bright spark who's always up for a giggle so her visit was a breath of fresh air.

Below Kate is the blond in the middle, a seal that scared us half to death at the beach and finally a shot of the ocean, I still can't get over how blue it is here (in New Zealand).

As most shop owners will tell you we're in the quiet months now. The rush of Christmas is over and shoppers of being good and saving their pennies. This means my income is at a low. Most of my spare cash has been going into my studio do up (more about that in a minute) but being a girlie girl I like to treat myself to new outfits as often as I can. Lucky thanks to the January sales and great op shops (charity shops as we call them in the UK) I've managed to score a new pair of trousers and retro dress for just over $20nz... not too much.

Finally I spent the week before last hinden in my studio painting what I am currently calling the 'Weapons Wall'. It's the frist piece of work I have just done for myself in ages. I'm not a 100% sure what the idea is behind it. I just wanted to paint something territorial, I think because I'm renting a shared space. Anyway just as I finished doing up the shared studio a private office in the same building became available. After sleeping on it I know I had to take the new space. It breaks my heart that the 4 weeks hard graft I (we) put into the first space was pretty much wasted time but the new space is perfect so I'm sucking it up and moving on.

I haven't blogged for months. I lost heart a little or rather a lot with this blog. It started as a travel blog after I left England to document my adventures in America. Then I landed in New Zealand and it became about another journey; the set up of a business and a means to find my way in becoming my own boss. 2011 was the best of times and the worse and I found myself at a lost as to what to write. 2011 was a huge year for my personal life. I won't bore you with the details but it ended well with me moving in with my boyfriend and his his young pup. We now live a very happy existence in a little grey villa in Dunedin in the South Island.

2011 wasn't the most creative of years although I did work on a few private commission pieces and when The All Blacks won the world cup I couldn't resist doing a Rugby dishes tea towel.

2012 is the year I get my work back on track. I have so many half design projects which will be getting finished. Plus other plans in the offing, which are already keeping me out of trouble. I'm also in the middle of moving into a new studio it's taking a huge effort to get it ready but I am planning to move 'Dear Colleen' in this weekend. Here is a sneak peek of the signage I painted on the back wall today. Sorry for this rather dry post. I'll try and blog a little more often and with a little more finesse from now on.

Winter is here! Or so I'm told. While the rest of the country was making snowmen I was out in the Auckland sun sipping a trim latte (I lie it was raining and it was a flat white).

I reached in to my scarf drawer (don't judge) to be greeted by an old ladies scarf collection. Black, tan, navy, houndstooth (!) and burberry tartan (again, please withhold judgement). I've been busy preaching on this blog about colour and filling my wardrobe with clothes worthy of a skittles commercial. My scarves however look like they are from the time colour forgot (2007-2010?).

It was the beautiful scarf by Bonbi Forest chosen in our twitter mash-up last post that made me really, REALLY want a fabulous scarf (that and my cold neck). Of course, the best thing about scarves is that is totally reasonable to have a few/loads.
If you want to splurge there are some amazing scarves from independent designers, each one is a piece of wearable art and could be worn all year round just bundle up a couple in winter (or team with a plainer one).

Social/Work - a guide to using social networking for your business

Firstly a little side note to say I'm sorry I have been absent on my blog for so long. Hopefully everyone has been enjoying the great posts from Evie Kemp. I've had personal and business issues, which have been distracting me and taking up a huge amount of my time. Thankfully over the past few weeks everything has been resolved. Also I just need to say, I couldn't have written the following article without the help of Emma McCleary an artist, crafter and friend who happens to have a grown up job, which involves being the social media voice for a big New Zealand company. Thank you Emma.

This is a guide to using social networking as a business. This is nothing more than my own personal take but this post is the result of over three months research, involving talking to businesses who use social networking, talking to members of the public and reading online articles as well as real books. This is not an academic paper, more highlighted notes of what I've discovered and personally found relevant. Plus I have included some insider info that I gained from my time working with big brands in design houses here in New Zealand and the UK.

I couldn't write a piece on social networking without also covering engagement. Engagement is one of the main buzz words in branding and marketing circles at the moment and is always linked into a business's social media strategy. This post will explain the basic principle of engagement, it's connection to social media and why these things are important. This is a long article but I have tried to keep it as brief as possible well covering everything I felt was relevant. I have broken it down into four lists that cover a basic explanation, what not to do, rules of conduct and good examples. Once again I will say this is a personal take so if you feel I've missed something out or disagree with any points please leave a comment below and share your views. I'm taking a liberty and assuming you understand what social networking is. There are many social networking platforms but the two most used currently are Facebook and Twitter, click on the links to read their own explanation as to what they do.

So Lets get down to brass tacks, customer engagement, social networking and your businessWhat is engagement:

Well as you might have guessed we're not talking white doves and diamond rings. The term engagement in the marketing world is actually pretty straight forward, it simply means to form bonds with your customer base so they feel a personal investment in your business - so they engage with you.

Why is engagement becoming an important marketing tool:
There are a few main reasons, firstly the public are becoming overwhelmed and immune to broadcast advertising. Broadcast advertising is the more traditional type of advertising on telly, posters, billboards, etc. Broadcast advertising on the whole tells you to buy a product and the reason why. The reason might be something obvious like it's cheaper than brand x or something subtle, for example David Beckham drinks this soft drink, you can be like him if you drink it to. Either way you are getting told. I've hear Broadcast media explained as standing in the street shouting until someone pays attention.

However marketing campaigns fail quickly on social media if they use the broadcast approach. If broadcast media is shouting in the street, engagement is all about whispering softly in someones ear. Social networking platforms such as Twitter or Facebook are akin to sitting round the pub having a chat with your mates rather than going to a lecture. Just imagine if you were hanging out with a friend and all they could say is 'I've made an awesome bag, you can buy it on my website and here's the link' then added nothing else to the conversation. I'm guessing you wouldn't want to hang out with them for very long! The same is true of that person in a social networking setting, they will be deleted or ignored. Good engagement marketing creates a dialogue between the business and the customer allowing both voices to be heard, this means a business can't be talking about it's self all the time.

Secondly, good engagement builds customer loyalty and customer loyally is what growing a strong business is all about. A loyal custom will give the best advertising there is, word of mouth. Building engagement into a business is hard work but a customer who is prepared to be an advocate for your brand is worth that effort. Think about it, who do you trust, your best friend telling you that cafe down the road is really good or a news paper ad saying the same thing! The motives are different, your friend gets no benefit apart from making sure you have a good meal, the advert from the cafe themselves clearly has their own profits at heart and there for is far less trust worthy.

Thirdly, what's great about engagement through social netwoking is that it's cheap (money wise at least). It doesn't cost you any cash to set up a Twitter or Facebook account. This is why so many small businesses have been embracing and using it so prevalently. Sadly and I include myself in this, not many manage or know how to use it in the right manner all the time.

The dangers of using engagement as a marketing tool:
I talk from personal experience that there are a great deal of pit falls when using social media for business, here are a few mistakes I have made and witnessed made by others:

Being too open and honest. Because social networking is primarily about forging links with others in a 'social' way there is a far greater pressure to be a 'real person' and knowing were to draw the line can be trickily. It's really easy to spot a fake on sites like Facebook and Twitter, so yes it is important for you to get your personality across. However ask yourself is it really healthy for your business that your potential customers or clients know you've just been dumped or that you just threw up on the sofa or you've been on a 24 hour drinking session and can't get out of bed. It's interesting in a Jerry Springer car crash telly way but I'm not sure I'll be choosing to invest my money in you.

Forgetting what you're saying is public. Once you get used to using social media as a communication tool it's easy to just get sucked into long chats with like minded people and forget that the world can see what your talking about. What gets said to a friend privately is very different to what should get said in a public and permanent way.

Venting. You work alone, you're having a bad day, you want to feel better by letting off some steam… should you do it in front of the world. No you shouldn't, particularly if it's a person you're upset about. I manage customer worries, complains and returns on a weekly bases as an online shop. Sometimes I hit a really challenging one, sometimes I have moaned about that challenging customer on twitter. This is something I will never do again, no potential customer, client or collaborator needs to feel like they are going to be publicly attacked because of their association with your business.

Misrepresentation. Things that are said in writing can come across with a much harder edge than something said in person where you can add a soft tone of voice and friendly body language. Writing is also sitting around longer to be reread and analysed, so a threw away statement can cause far greater upset when written than it would if just spoken.

Misrepresenting others. Things are a bit simpler if you are a one man band but as your business grows you might find that you take on staff or work in collaboration with other people and suddenly what you say isn't just your opinion it becomes theirs by default. So if your business represents others it's important to be a lot more neutral. Remember what you say reflects on everyone attached to you. For example if you're a shop and one of the brands you sell is a bright friendly children's clothing line it might be detrimental to them if you swear on your Facebook page, it may well be ok for your over all more adult brand but not for their child centric one.

Time wasting. Social media can be hugely addictive but as a business you should be asking yourself if the hours you are putting in are adding up to what you get out. Also do you're followers really need to see a constant stream of consciousness or are you in fact just spamming them. Now those are depressing thoughts for a self confessed twitter addict:)

Rules for good conduct and representing your business in the best possible way:
Know your target market. Your target market are the specific group of consumers that your company aims it's products or services at, the people who are most likely to buy from you. My Business 'Dear Colleen' has a clear target market, educated women 25-50. You need to know your target market so you know who you are speaking to.

Tone of voice. All big companies have a tone of voice set for them as part of their over all brand, if you don't come from a design or marketing back ground, a brand is far more complicated than a logo and set of colours. When a business gets branded it comes with a book of instructions explaining how they need to represent themselves visually, verbally and in writing. The tone of voice usually referrers to how the company writes but also can be as detailed as how staff members should speak on the phone. The tone of voice you pick should reflect your personality, well keeping your target market in mind. A hip hop radio station with a 18-30 target market of urban males might have a tone of voice that is 'Edgy, Cheeky, Passionate' where as a Cup Cake Maker with a target market of females 40- 60 might be 'Warm, Helpful, Charming'

Engage. People talk a lot about numbers of followers but numbers mean nothing if no one is playing any attention to you or your business. The only sure fire way of creating engagement with your customers or clients is to genuinely take an interest in them and what they are saying. A good non personal way of doing this is to ask, listen and politely accept feedback. Everyone likes to feel like their views are valued and understood and chances are their take on things will be helpful to you and your business. (Esty's Facebook questions are a great example of this)

Manage conflict professionally. When lots of people are talking in a public domain there are always going to be times when there are differences in opinion. If these differences in opinion are directed at your business you need to be prepared to handle them quickly and seamlessly. Firstly don't get angry. Take the conflict out of the public arena. Listen to what they have to say. Ask yourself if they have a point. Work out the facts and think about where they are coming from. If there is a problem with something you have done, fix it and say sorry. If there is nothing you can do make sure they feel understood but make it clear there is no room for the dialogue to continue.

Think before you publish. If what you're about to say to the whole world isn't something you would feel comfortable saying in a professional work place, maybe you shouldn't be saying it. Does this post add any value to your business or your followers. Ideally the aim is to represent your business in the best possible light, ask yourself does this post do that.

Fix your mistakes. Lets face it we're only human and sometimes we slip up. If you say something out of line or upset someone, you need to deal with it. Own your mistakes, apologise and do it quickly and publicly.

Strength in Numbers. If you're a venter, work alone and just plain need to speak you mind sometimes (and lets face it that's quite a few of us) The smartest thing you can do for your business is to run a personal locked account. Keep your business up beat and pro and keep everything else behind close doors.

Five general rules of thumb:
-Be friendly but professional
-No religion, no politics
-Take conflict out of the public domain
-Put your businesses voice before your own
-Think

Nailing it

I've been wanting to do a post about nails for a while now. I'm always collecting images of amazing nails to try and recreate (and occasionally I do when I'm feeling patient). Doing slightly more unusual nail designs is a bit easier and cheaper now thanks to a couple of tips I heard.
Firstly, Gem Fatale on her blog shows how using liquid eyeliner (just cheap stuff) works perfectly for nail art (better even than some actual stuff I bought).
Secondly, the lovely Leah Light shared a top trade secret that Jordana, the US brand stocked by most $2 shops is actually one of the best quality polishes around. I can vouch for that, I'm wearing it in orange now and it really is good stuff. It sure makes it a lot easier to change your nail colour as often (or more) than you change your sheets when you don't have to pay $20 - $30 per colour.

Finally, to do reverse french manicures or coloured ones you can buy a pack of French Manicure stickers (also from the $2 shop) but often it's easier to go slow and do it by eye. Practice makes perfect.

This week I got my 15 minutes when I was featured in Viva's 10 favourite things. You can read it here and see the pictures here (if you haven't already, I've kind of shamelessly been promoting it (this being case in point) only stopping short of sky-writing it).

Anyway, lists are fun so today I'm doing my NZ winter fashion 10. I'm honestly writing this in fingerless mittens and if that's not reason to go out and embrace the cold season, I don't know what is.

The house of G has really picked up their game lately and actually have loads of lovely stuff in the perfect winter colour palette. I love how fashion influence has made me adore this sweater when last year I would have been calling it 'baby poo'. I revel in my own fickleness, it's very funny. The bobble knit, 3/4 sleeves and gold button detailing are spot on.Glassons sweater with gold buttons. $49.99.

Tights are obviously an essential. Did you know Columbine is the only hosiery factory still going in New Zealand? Based in Gisborne this family business has been making really nice tights since 1961 (that's 50 years). They have a beautiful range and they're top quality too. Oh and they are nearly almost always included in the Farmers sale. Win, win. For colours, I vote ditch the black and go red, maroon, rust, chartreuse, forest green or grey. Wear them with some beautiful oatmeal toned over the knee socks (Glassons has some) for added warmth and total cuteness.

Geodisic rings by Bliss in a Teacup.Every ring is different, hand carved from lovingly selected pieces of beautiful wood that Bliss in a Teacup have found as far away as Canada. I have one and it goes so well my winter style. I love the edgy style coupled with the soft wood tones and how the wood warms as I wear it. I do also want one I could take an eye out with as well though (can't get too soppy on you). Bliss in a Teacup also make gorgeouscarved wooden pendants. Check their blog and etsy shop for general loveliness.

Chester pin tuck skirt by Ruby. The pleated woollen skirt is winter's answer to pleated chiffon. Cozy and cute and yet not so floaty & flirty that it will whip up in a little wind. Over-ride your natural instinct to go for a black skirt, Vitamin D deficiency is making us all depressed so cheer up (and don't do drugs, kids). $179.

It's impossible for me not to include these bow suede gloves. They are suede, driving style, perforated, have bows and are reduced to $15 right now too. Wearing gloves always makes me want to go in to shops and point at things.

Because these boots are so cheap, I'm putting in two pairs because it would be a shame not to. Seeing as how our winter is often short and unreasonably wet it's nice to not remortgage the house on fashion boots. Instead, put your investment in to some equestrian style leather boots that will last you years and have fun with little booties. Antila black $49.99 and Razza taupe $59.99 both from No.1 Shoes.

I had to include this dress because it's so pretty. Oh and would be absolutely wearable in summer too. It's the perfect base for wrapping up in pretty scarves and coats. I'd wear it with an orange belt or some crazy necklace to mix it up. Navy is almost always the better looking and more select sister to black. Carnaby dress from Wildpair $99.Winter is not the time to forgo on a bit of baggage. When you get to the cafe/art gallery/hardware store you'll end up having to unwrap your carefully placed accessories. Don't be that person dropping gloves and tying your scarf round your waist while huffing & puffing, take a bag you can stuff a few bits in. This Saben Edie Cowboy $369 from Wanda Harland is a bit of an extravagant purchase but it's classic, lovely and worth the investment. I'm just imagining how smoothy that leather is.This tiny porcelain fox necklace is the sweetest thing ever. He just looks so pleased with himself. Eeeeee! Ultra love. There's not much else to say about him, besides 'gah!' and other cooing noises. $70 from Madame Fancypants.Honestly, as fun as dressing up is on those raining, super cold days it's nice to just stay inside with the fire on and a good book. Totally on theme and a super read is "The Dress Circle: New Zealand Fashion Design since 1940". I'm currently mid-read and finding it a real eyeopener, plus it's packed with lots of great pictures $64.99.

The Humble Tee

This post is dedicated to the t-shirt in all it's forms. When thinking about clothes (something I do often) my mind often skims over the t-shirt, a mistake for sure. The humble tee should never be underestimated. Sure, for many it's a staple but in equal parts it has the potential to be a statement.

As varied as the design or print of a tee are the styles, shapes and way of wearing. I'll admit now I'm a bit of a more recent convert to the way of the tee as previously I was scared of how I would work one with my uniform of flippy skirts. I have now seen the light, that an awesome t-shirt can be worn with almost anything and done right can really add something to an outfit by giving me that "oh, this? I just threw this on this morning" cool that I'd possibly (probably) been lacking.

With t-shirts, any stigma regarding size and even gender go out of the window. Buy what ever size you like and style it your way. Walk in to the guy's section and try them on, chances are it will look better on you anyway. Can you sense my new found liberation?
Possibly the best thing about them is that they're like fashion Pokemon (though I actually know quite a fashionable pikachu…another story) in that you can collect a set, find exclusive, unique and hard to find ones. You can buy them online and they will almost definitely fit.

As we come to the start of June the NZ winter is technically upon us. I know some people like to have a grumble about the colder weather, but quite honestly I really couldn't be happier. I think coats are just the best clothing item around, oh and boots…well coats and boots. No other item is so worth throwing a bit more money at, a great coat can be both incredibly flattering and practical as well as being a real statement piece. Perhaps you noticed (maybe you haven't got the right coat) but people love to comment on and covet a great coat. Choose a great one and it will last you for years.

A beautiful black or navy jacket will serve you well but outerwear is a great excuse to swath yourself in that colour that makes you look like a movie star and makes everyone around you feel like they're in a black & white film while you're skipping along in The Wizard of Oz.

If, like me, you live somewhere that remains fairly temperate even thorough the winter months (bah humbug) use it as an opportunity to go and visit friends in cooler climates and swan around in your winter splendour. Alternatively adopt a sleek and lightweight trench style to see you through.

A Right Royal Wedding

I'm absolutely going to watch the Royal Wedding tomorrow and if you say you're not, I won't believe you.

The wedding of the 'century' (just 11 years in to it) has been hyped to within an inch of it's life but I'm still excited. Grumble about the Royals all you like, they are still the closest embodiment we dreamers have to a real-life fairytale. Dear William is Prince Charming and Kate is Cinderella (with a lot more money and better schooling, but still), their relationship has already stood the test of time and they really do look very happy. It's romantic. We love romance.

Oh and we love the opportunity for a party. Any excuse right? Next Friday has become a huge excuse for a party, get digging out the tea set, the bunting and the gin and party like it's VE day all over again. I rather think that party girl Kate would say 'Hoorah' to all that. So get in the spirit, dress up and gather your friends round the tele. To her credit, noone quite does that classy, appropriately gorgeous formal dressing, quite like our Katie. So, for a little inspiration for your own outfit on Friday here are some of her key looks.

Leaving on a jet plane

I spend far more time waiting at the airport to pick up/drop off people than I do travelling myself. Don't worry I'm not too sad about it, I make myself feel better by scrutinising the attire of everyone who comes through those arrival doors. Looking good while sleeping upright and eating off your lap for 20 hours is no easy feat and most people either look totally awful or ridiculously over dressed. I believe looking good after long haul (or even short haul for that matter) is a fine art but totally worth perfecting. There are a lot of people on a 747 and you really do want to be the one the hundreds of other passengers stare at enviously as you strut down the aisle to depart (that's right, you strut now). Also, at the end of a long journey there are usually old friends waiting and you don't want their first thought to be ' Wow, she's looking a bit rough these days'.

So where to start?

• Firstly don't wear anything that will get excessively crumpled.

• Don't wear a skirt or dress, if you insist on it make sure you wear leggings. It doesn't matter how many times you walk up and down, you might still get swollen ankles (cankles) and will look totally awful. A nice pair of trousers or jeans will hold you in much better stead.

• Wear a pair of shoes that are easy to slip on and off, are casual but not slippers. Ballet flats are great for this. Heels are terrible and try hard.

• Wear a nice jumper/sweater. A stripy one always looks nice, cashmere is always great for that first class feeling (and budget). It won't crumple, you can pull it over your crumpled top and you'll look all casual and cosy which will help create envy amongst fellow travellers.

• Do take a neutral coloured pashmina/giant scarf. It's what magazines tell you to do but it makes sense. It can double as an extra blanket and an extra cover up while whizzing past the paparazzi (of course).

• Don't try and get on the plane with numerous plastic bags and don't take on carry-on luggage you don't really need. A nice, big lightweight handbag is the best because you can get everything you need it and still squish it under the seat in front of you. You can always add a proper carry on bag full of shopping on your return journey. You want to move through the airport effortlessly and you don't want to be that person dropping things from the overhead locker in the middle of the night.

• Never underestimate the power of mascara to make you look refreshed. Ditto, never underestimate the power of a dry shampoo (a travel can of Batiste) to make you look (comparably) like you just stepped out of a Pantene commercial. Also, I can personally vouch for those weird little disposable toothbrushes called 'Wisps', they are actually quite great and you can brush your teeth without water if needs be.

• Always buy yourself an indecent amount of m&m's or your preferred snacks. You're essentially going to be watching movies all day, you may as well make the most of it. Besides, you never know quite how bad the 'fritatta' is going to be.

Finally, if you've finished a magazine. Leave it in departures for someone else. They will love you for it.

The important role of Project Runway

Here in New Zealand, the arty crafty fashion posse that we all (albeit unofficially) belong to, go gaga for Project Runway. Last night, season 8 began on our screens (if you already know the outcome I BEG you to keep your lips sealed!) and I actually did a little dance when I found out it was playing.

Project Runway really is just your typical reality TV show. The contestants are for the most part melodramatic airheads and half of them seemingly can't sew. The projects are more often than not tasteless and tacky and the entire show is one hour of hardcore product placement (yes we noticed you HP, BlueFly now Piperlime, L'oreal and Mood). So, what makes it so enjoyable to watch and so hard to look away from?

The answer is simple really. It's the ability to sit there and cringe, bitch and criticise. In this lovely handmade and indie designed world we are just so nice to each other. Don't get me wrong, I love that and I think we should be nice to each other. But it is so refreshing and fun to sit and mime throwing-up in front of the tv while yet another Project Runway catastrophe comes down the catwalk. It all gets very critical but then when something genuinely good comes out we can get all excited about that.

When you create your own designs/art/jewellery/clothing for a living you can get caught up in feeling like you're the one being judged. Once a week, Thursdays at 9.30pm to be precise, it's fun to be the judge.

Colleen was lucky enough to go the re-opening of The Roxy, a Wellington Cinema that exemplifies the glamour of the golden age of Hollywood. It has been painstakingly restored to it's former 1930's glory and now in super-modern 2011 it appears absolutely opulent, lavish and over the top. It is a total novelty to us to imagine a trip to the movies as something so glamourous.

The 30's did dressing up so well but in ways that we can relate to. It wasn't the roaring, frivolous decade of the 20's nor the entirely somber and restrained 40's. The 30's had style and a modern attitude. Designs were simple but refined, elegant and sophisticated even by todays standards.

The aspects of 30's fashion that I especially adore, is the way in which women wore the trousers. High waisted, wide legged ones that gave a silhouette not all that different to an evening gown. Trousers were still not common female clothing so weren't worn with the kind of day-to-day mundanity we tend to now. I love the way that an underlying practicality was given such a fashion focussed twist. See: Katherine Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich.

The 30's were 70 years ago now but in so many ways those times weren't all so dissimilar to the present and today in 2011 much of the style and fashion would still look incredible and contemporary. Imagine walking into the office dressed as Katherine Hepburn, I'd argue that everybody would consider it a pretty modern take on corporate attire. That's the beauty of fashion and design, as time passes, aspects and influences come back and are re appropriated. And, if you're asking me, the 30's could do with a bit more of a comeback.

Last week I wrote about nice girly hairstyles, in fact I ALWAYS write about girls. It's not very fair, so in the interest of fairness this week we're going to discuss/analyse facial hair. Please understand this is not a gratuitous, trawling-the-internet-perving-at-manly-men post but a genuine critique of structure and form. I swear.

Facial hair has the tendency to be a bit like marmite (and I don't just mean full of toast crumbs), you either love it or hate it. Regardless of your personal preference you can't deny that it does lend a certain masculinity that nothing else can because only men (not boys and only special ladies) can grow a proper beard.

Now I'll stop before I get all prehistoric on you and present: The Bad.

Clive Owen, The big mo. Makes you look like a creepy old school teacher. I think this is the worst facial hair I've seen in a long time. It shocked me to the core.

Brad Pitt, playing the 'look how big my beard is game' results in him looking like he hasn't seen a shower in years and completely dissolves any of that handsome jawline we know and love.

Matthew Fox, aka that guy from Lost. Soul patches are so lame. So, so lame.

And in the interests of a fair analysis: The Good.

Zach Galifianakis, ok he's not your typical heartthrob but he's cool and he wouldn't be half as cool without his fuzz. It's just the right balance of wild and tamed.

Justin Timberlake, he's a bit of baby face but his light covering lends him a certain something.

George Clooney, he's previously done terrible, terrible things with his beard but this gorgeous silver specked creation is perfection, like he spent the weekend at your house and forgot his razor.

So, beards or no beards? Who's your favourite furry fellow? (I just wanted to say that!)

I keep thinking of that John Lennon quote lately, you know the one "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans". I should learn not to post anything on this blog about my life as nothing works out the way I think it will.

I've just gone through one hell of a stressful seven day. In fact I can't believe it has only been seven days. I have been asking myself some very big questions and on the whole not been getting any solid answers. Maybe when it comes to life there are no answers, you either do or you don't. Well this has been my conclusion but like I said I've not really been thinking straight, so I would take everything I say with a pitch of salt:)

My big dilemma is really that I strongly feel that I do not want to return to the UK. I'm about as English as they come so it's a bit of a shock to find that I feel like this. When I think back over my the past 14 months in Wellington I can honestly say it has been one of the happiest times of my life and even over this past week, which has been filled with lows, I have had so many amazing friends looking after me both in life and online. In short I do not feel ready to leave New Zealand yet... I do not wish to state this as fact but it's close to being the case. I am very lucky to have a loving family who are supporting me and I have made my mind up not to think of it as anything more than what will make me happiest for the next six months. After that I can ask some big questions again.

Before we get into 'fashion friday' I just wanted to do a bit of house keeping - it's been so long since I have posted anything on my blog. Since the earthquake that hit Christchurch nearly four weeks ago now I really haven't been feeling like myself, I think it was the strew that broke the camels back. I was already so stressed about moving back to the other side of the world, leaving my job and working out what's happening with my business that I'm not sure what happened but I honestly feel like I lost the plot a bit. Not in a bad or dramatic way, I've just been going out and having fun. I've pushed myself more and in ways I didn't expect and I've just been glad to be alive. Of course 'Carpe Diem' can only go on so long and my head is now coming back to where it should be. I very much plan to get this blog and my business in general back on track over the coming weeks. I totally know now that I am doing the right thing in moving back to the south of England for myself and my work, but it comes at a cost as I will miss New Zealand very much. Just to finish I would like to say I'm sorry for being so rubbish but I promise I'm back on form and ready to write:)

I don't know about you, but i'm still hung up on trying to look like a geek/librarian/academic (the last few weeks of this blog are some what a testament to that). While the idea of vanity glasses didn't sit well with everybody I think this weeks topic of hair will.

The best styles look like you tied it up in your sleep and then got dragged through a hedge backwards and yet look so romantic and a little scatter brained. The key is to look like you couldn't care less about your hair when in reality it's of absolute importance. Put your hairspray away and cancel your appointment with the hairdresser.

As usual I've collected a few pictures of my favourites. If you're fortunate enough to have already perfected the ultimate messy topknot (with a pencil in it?) or the falling out ponytail you could consider trying one of these. Just don't let anyone think you care.

Or maybe they do?

I sit here writing this post safe behind my fairly strong prescription lenses. For me wearing glasses isn't really a choice (ok, it is and most of the time I choose contact lenses) it's a matter of personal and public safety. Lately, however, the trend has developed for people to wear big statementy frames often with blank lenses.

In searching online I found blogs that got incredibly upset over the use of blank glasses as a fashion statement and claimed that they trivialise a physical impairment. Firstly, I am going to say - they're just glasses. Calm down. Secondly, I'm going to argue that yes glasses are cool and the right pair can really frame the face and give a person a new look.

I don't think it's a question of necessarily looking geeky (though obviously you generally will) but of looking different and looking good. Just like doing your hair differently or wearing a dress when you always wear jeans, experimenting with how you look is your prerogative and no one has the right to question the strength of your prescription (except perhaps if you're driving them home).

Anyway, I'm stepping off my soapbox and sharing some cheap inexpensive fake frames, no one needs to know you didn't go for an eye test.

Oh, and the title of the post? Isn't true. Obviously.

This week started with the Oscars and though we might pretend not to care, it's difficult to resist sitting down and doing a full on fashion critique. It's easy for us to gasp, ooh and pretend to gag while sitting in our pyjamas in front of the TV (or is that just me?). Slamming a persons outfit is mean but these for these events it's accepted (even encouraged, ask Joan Rivers).

This years Oscar fashions fell flat. Usually there are more blatant displays of absurdity and bad taste, where this year even the ugly dresses felt somewhat tame. Similarly in the past there have been a number of stars who dressed amazingly and totally knocked us out, this year I feel there was only one.

Starting with the good and then moving through the bad to the downright ugly I would like to volunteer Cate Blanchett for Best Dressed. She is one person who seems to always get it right, which is irritating but true. Her beaded Givenchy gown was both fashion-forward and incredibly flattering on her. Highly commended would be Mila Kunis in her Lavender Elie Saab gown.

Amy Adams , Florence Welsh and Sharon Stone all get an A for effort from me as comparatively they looked like they'd made a real effort to be different. None of them totally pulled it off. But I admire their attempts (sure Sharon Stone looked like Cruella Deville but I thought that was quite becoming of her).

Now it starts to get dull as a bevy of undeniably gorgeous ladies in light, metallic frocks trail past. Gwyneth Paltrow, Michelle Williams, Mandy Moore and Halle Berry all took on this look. You can imagine all the over paid stylists uttering 'ethereal' to their clients, apparently unaware that between them they created an entire hoard of angels. When the aim of the Oscar game is to stand out this wasn't good.

I think we can all agree that it was better to be a member of the above glittering, glowing club than the early 90's flashback that Reese Witherspoon, Penelope Cruz and Jennifer (who is this person?) Lawrence were channelling. Skin tight, full-length lycra that even the best body can't make interesting. For us at home wanting to be wowed these seemed so lacking in style or direction. Reese Witherspoon went a step further dressing how Elle Woods (Legally Blonde) would for the Oscars.

I'll finish with the worst dressed. Scarlett Johanssen. This is all the more damning as someone who has dressed so well in the past. This outfit is so unflattering, so ugly and such an awful colour. Her relationship with Sean Penn should have told us that she has no taste (couldn't resist).

Over Christmas I read 'Luella's Guide to English Style'. It's not my usual choice of book (I'm mostly a fiction-only reader) but I found myself riveted and reading it cover to cover. It's charming, pretty and surprisingly informative. Fashion theory is fascinating and somehow it manages to justify all manner of style misdemeanours.

'Luella's Guide to English Style' was a real eye opener for me. It defines British style so perfectly and all the movements and various strains behind and within it. To quote Luella, "My aim is simply to dig up the roots of and, more importantly, show my unerring appreciation and devotion to those contrived subtleties and that blatant contrariness that makes British women so staggeringly adept in the art of expression through style".

What is evident is that true British style can not be bought from a catalogue as it is a culmination of so many things. Critically is an ever present nod to the great British countryside - a pair of wellies or an anorak (or Barbour). A liberal dose of the old and woolly. Some great tights. An apparent disregard for matching. A total regard for comfort. An ageless style that would look both right on an 8 year old girl and your 80 year old Grandma. Various dalliances with multiple movements and scenes.

In a way real British style is both indefinable and yet totally recognisable. It celebrates the individual and is absolutely charming.

It's hard to do it full justice in a blog post. So, consider this part book review and do the extended reading for fun.

Union Jack Tapestry Cushion Cover

Today I want to write a post about England, because as any reader of this blog will know I'm going back soon.

However as I’m in New Zealand I can’t really write anything without a mention of the devastating earthquake that hit Christchurch yesterday. I don’t want to harp on, clearly the news is very sad. I have not personally been affected but people around me have. It’s been a pretty horrible 24 hours and I can’t imagine what those caught up in it must be going through. On a totally selfish note I had one of those strange moments of clarity, that if the earthquake had hit in the same way at the same time in Wellington I’m pretty sure I would have been dead. I find it liberating those rare occasions that I truly except I’m mortal it makes me less scared of life and more scared of not living.

Anyway back to England where I am unlikely to encounter an earthquake- no, we just have friendly old terrorists. Beyond obviously family and friends, here’s a brief list of things I love about my native land

Accents, we have loads of them all different and rich, how I miss those long vowels and lazy consonants or my own Somerset accent. Nothing in this world says home to me like hearing my Dad on the phone swearing like a farmer.

BBC Radio Four, I miss you every single day. I’m so so dyslexic it’s the easiest way for me to keep updated on news, learn about history and generally sound like an all round know-it-all.

Manners. I truly love that very English trait of walking into a lamppost and apologizing.

The Key To My Heart Forgives - Rob Ryan

Feeling like the centre of everything wonderful. Great music, art, fashion, design. This is a big one for my business as I'm slowly finding myself on the same role call as my hero designers. (Every time I visit to dry for’s site and see my work along side Rob Ryan my heart does a little pitter patter.)

But the really big thing I miss is living round history. My family home is set in the quintessential rural idyll, our house it’s self is so old that the stone steps have all been worn down in the middle from thousand or foot steps over hundreds of years. It makes me feel part of the pass and part of the future all at once and I love that feeling.

So, really going home isn’t all bad, in fact it’s a lot of good and I have many lovely events to look forward to including a friends wedding and for once I have the outfit sorted including a fine pair of gold heels. Tickets to see Rufus Wainwright at the royal opera house two nights in a row – am I a crazy stalker fan? Finally a trip to Paris so I can visit my spiritual home land Colette I can almost hear the angels sing when I say the name.

As this week marks the one year anniversary of Dear Colleen (congratulations!) it only seems appropriate to get in to the celebratory spirit and admire some lovely party frocks.

I'm a firm advocate of dressing up properly (even if i don't do it often enough) and a staunch opposer to going out for an evening wrapped in a small amount of lycra and/or mesh. When I first started going out (to underage discos) it was the time of the most awful fashion crime otherwise known as the trouser-skirt - a pair of bootleg trousers with a matching miniskirt attached to the top (I'm not willing to bring this blog down with it's image). Anyway, it's no surprise that nowadays I love the opportunity to wear a proper, lovely dress.

Here in New Zealand girls are forgetting what it's like to really dress up and a casual dress code has become acceptable anytime and anywhere. It's a terrible shame and I hope current trends and shows like Mad Men can bring dressing up back. Wearing a pretty dress with simple hair & makeup and flats in the daytime looks just as great as a full evening get up.

Well a year ago today I did something very simple and very life changing, I listed a few prints on etsy. I remember thinking at the time, if I can just make 100 sales in a year that would be great. If I'm honest it seemed like an impossible dream. I've had a great year, made up of a great deal of good fortune, luck and support. This little mile stone marks a real turning point for me from hobby business, to full time job. I enter my second year of trading without a clue of where I'll be in another twelve months time but very excited to give all my time and energy to building whatever it's going to be.

Well everyone knows you can't have a birthday without cake! So I nipped into floriditas for a lemon cup cake and a hot chocolate. nom nom nom...

...and what sort of birthday would it be without gifts. So today you can win one of my 'Dishes I'd rather be doing' tea towels and a copy of Frankie Sweet Treats (I some how ended up with three copies!).

first dibs

As you might have already read on here, I'm leaving Wellington in 9 week and I'm slowly getting around to sorting out my worldly goods. I spoke about this with the girls at Craft Up last tuesday night and they asked if I would give them first dips before putting my stuff up on Trade Me. So if you're interested email dearcolleen@live.com by 12 noon tomorrow.

1. Above. Turn of the century wooden tool box. Bought at auction last year it measures 47cm high - 70cm long - 25cm deep. It's a bit bashed and a bit rusty (it was bought that way) and has a notable crack in the wood on the front but it's total vintage lovelyness. When you open it up you'll find two draws and that the inside has been pained a aqua green. I've been using it in my bedroom to hold all my art materials and will be very sad to say goodbye. I'm asking for $40.

2. Three vintage suitcases all old and a little bashed but still in working order. A brown leather with a charming envelope style sticking on the front and back. One powder blue and very light blue early 60s very sturdy truck style case and a dapper brown and white striped suitcase with plastic wrap round buckles also 50s or 60s. I'm asking for $30 for all three.

3. Two vintage suitcases, I guessing both of these are pre 50's. One is black leather with hand painted monogram on the front and the other is a canvas truck style case covered in lots of old travel stickers. Again they are vintage so bashed and rusty. I'm asking for $10 for the pair or you can buy all five suitcase for $35. They are great props for photo shoots.

4. I'm a bit heart broken to part with this, it's my 'Mad Men' style 60's chrome floor light. It makes a perfect evening reading lamp. I bought it at auction (after a bit of a fight with another lady:) it was PAC tested by the auction house before they sold it, which was only six months ago so it should be in good working order and safe. It's 125cm tall. I'm asking $40 for it, which is less than I paid.

5. Mixed Craft materials, a real bargain all un-used bought for a project I never found time to start. there is around $140 worth of jewelry wire, crimps, jump rings and tools. On flicker you can see the price tags and the wire alone retails at over $100. I'm asking $55 for the lot.

6. Last up is my lovely bike. I'm still not 100% I want to sell. I bough it less then 5 months ago and just cycle at weekends, it's the best bike I have ever owned. It's a boy 'Giant Cypress' bike in black and cost $830 new plus I've added lights, a lock and a mudguard so it's well kitted out. It has a couple of tiny tiny bit's of rust, nothing to worry about (I cycle by the sea alot) and the tyres need to be pumped up but apart from than it's like new. I'm asking $470.

One piece wonder

Here in New Zealand, summer is at its hottest and I figured those of you in the northern hemisphere are probably starting to dream of warmer days too, so I thought I'd share my picks for a great swimsuit. Or more specifically, a great one-piece.

There was a time, not so long ago, that the one-piece was banished from cool beach wear by its little sister Bikini, and resigned to swimming laps at the community pool. Now however, the one-piece is back looking great, and as someone who would rather swim through a million jellyfish than show my midriff, I'm very happy about it.I've tried to choose togs that could suit almost everyone and that make you look and feel good. There are a few obvious tricks that make a flattering swimsuit.

• Structure - this includes panels, possible tummy control, underwired or padded cups to keep everything in place.

• Boy leg shorts or a longer body that covers the very top of the thighs.

• Ruched detailing over the tummy area.

• and/or a belt to emphasis your figure. This is something you can make easily and cheaply to add to an existing one-piece to make it more Bond girl.

Nowhere is it truer than at the beach that if you are comfortable and feel good, you'll look good. So when you don't want to bear it all, cover up with a lightweight maxi dress, kaftan or pull on some loose shorts or culottes.

Just don't forget the sunscreen and the ice cream (the important bits!).

procrastinators: leaders of tomorrow

Ok apologies up front, this is a personal post and I don’t mean in an interesting way before I get your hopes up. It’s just that I find myself in a bit of a rut, which among other things is affecting this blog. I’m sorry it’s been so sadly neglected of late. I have so many half written posts kicking around but I just can’t fine the focus to finish them. Focus seems to be my big problem this year, I quite often wonder if I have attention deficit disorder but always end up doing something else before I can find out.

The worst thing about my current lack of focus is that I have designers block, this wouldn’t be so bad if my mind wasn’t still ticking away coming up with concepts, the problems really starts when I sit down and try and turn those ideas into anything visual.

I suspect this creative dry spell is down to a couple of factors. Firstly I only really do my best work when I’m down to the wire. I really haven’t been faced with any deadline lately consequently all of my work has been a bit lacklustre. Secondly I’ve finally booked tickets to travel back to the other side of the world. I leave New Zealand for Sydney Australia on the 17 April and after five days as a tourist I fly all the way home to the UK. Of course in the nine weeks I have left in New Zealand I have a million things to do.

I leave my day job in five weeks and my flat in six. I’m going to Melbourne on a business research trip the day after I move out of my home. I need to sort out the shipping of my chairs (and the answer is still no to all those who have asked, sorry). I have to organize all the aspects of the part of my business that I leave in New Zealand (that’s a biggie). I need to reduce all my worldly possessions so I only leave with what I can fit in a backpack. And most importantly of all I want to arrange a kick ass leaving do/ladies like afternoon tea party. I guess it doesn’t sound like that much put into a paragraph but this isn’t even the start, these are just the small niggles I fill my head with to put off thinking about what the hell I’ll do when I’m back in the UK just myself and my small etsy shop to keep me afloat. I know it’ll be ok and I know that really in the big scheme of things I always have a loving family who will look after me but at the moment, if I’m honest, I’m really scared.

The truth is that really isn't true at all and modern geek is as much a matter of appearance as it is a lifestyle.

So let's assume you already have a whole bunch of obscure film quotes up your sleeve and an unhealthy obsession with collecting pencils (nothing wrong with that) but you want to make sure you look the part too. Fortunately geek chic is a simple look to perfect.

The most important thing is to look as though you pretend to not care for your appearance (though obviously we all know you do). Hair should be very low maintenance, a messy top knot for long hair or a scruffy, unbrushed bob for short. Don't dye it, or if you do, keep it dull.

Clothes should always tend towards the boyish and everything should be a bit too big. In a charming way. Jeans, mens cardigans and sweatshirts are staples.

Remember you're an intellectual so express an opinion. Use badges or a (preferably vintage) t-shirt.

The satchel is the only real bag option. The more battered the better. This should house your modern geek equipment - phones, ipods, ipads.

Shoes should be masculine. Leather brogues, lace up boots, Chucks or basic old fashioned sandals.

Note: The geek is a little dishevelled but ultimately not a total scruff bag. You should still be able to gain employment at the library or art shop and should smell like paint, tea, roses or old leather (satchel) not B.O.

Finally, don't forget your glasses, charm and wit, nor your library card. Or your thermos if required.

Doggy Style: A short guide to a blog and business worthy pet

I hold dogs in very high regard. To the self-employed a dog is often a best friend, an accessory, a muse, a colleague and a photo prop all in one. A dog won't let you sleep in and waste the morning, a dog forces you to get outside at least once a day and take some time out, a dog is something who'll listen to you talk and perhaps save your sanity. Sure, there are those of you who claim to not be 'dog people' but I reckon you haven't tried life with a dog.

I find that if I walk into a shop and the owner has their faithful friend sitting behind the counter I'm about 80% more likely to buy something. Same goes for online shop, if theres a dog in the picture it's instant love. I love the dog, and by proxy the seller and the product. They call it puppy love.

And so, it follows that just as much as I like dogs in shops, I love shopping for my doggy companions. It's easy to get caught up in the strange world of animal attire and find yourself perplexed over a miniature pair of dungarees or a puppy tutu. However let's approach this from an independent business point and think of your dog not only as your lunch date but also (to some extent) as an extension of you and your business. You don't wear a Von Dutch hoodie (or do you?!) and so neither should your dog. I've picked out some really lovely canine clothes and accessories that will ensure your four-legged friend is always blog-feature ready even if you aren't. (I do apologise to cats, who also make great business partners but do not generally react well to being dressed up and paraded around town.)

Merry Christmas, happy New Year and all of that – I know we’re now well past the socially excepted point for saying this but what are you going to do. As you can probably tell my New Years resolution wasn’t to be more organized – I’m quite a believer in resolutions and tend to make one single rule each year. I’ve had great success with the one rule system, while other friends make it a month at most only eating lattuce, well hand making all their soap and running up a mountain everyday, I give myself a single task that I can usually just about manage to stick to. One year I never used a lift or elevators, one I give up chocolate, a particularly fun year was spend swearing more creatively and then there was the memorable and not hugely successful year of being a bad-ass.

However this year I’m branching out and have set myself two. My first one is shamefully sickening but boils down to being a better more caring human being – to try as often as possible to see the world from other peoples point of view and to generally be less judgemental – in life and online. The second is in the title, it might be the Chinese year of the rabbit but for me at least it’s the year of the dog, I don’t say this lightly I grown up with dogs and I fully understand the tie and commitment owning one is but I’m finally ready and when I say ready I mean can aim to be ready by the end of the year (clearly I need a home first). I have a wish list of breeds my first choice at the moment being the Norfolk as shown at the into – it’s my Father (who is a fairly well know figure in dog circles) small dog of choice. I suspect this is mostly duel to the fact my family live in the English country side as do a lot of rats who sadly aren’t shy of coming in doors. Norfolk terriers are considered the best dog in the business at ratting. For me though they are a good size, look like teddy bears and are still not a silly princess dog. My second choice is the Boston shown above from what I have read they make amazing (the best) apartment dogs and I know they would just look beautiful in photo shoots. Is that terribly shallow of me?

Trend forecasting must be a scary occupation. Simultaneously looking in to the future and in a way dictating it.

I've been looking through the S/S 2011 collections and reading what I can to try and figure out what we should or might be wearing later in the year but to be honest, while I love a lot of what I see there are things that I hope stay on last years runway never to return. I've put together another list of what we canexpect to be seeing a lot of this year. Perhaps in 12 months I can look back and compare notes.

The 90's/minimalism

Starting with the bad news is the return of the 90's, specifically the 90's shift. Simple (or no) tailoring, spaghetti straps, straight up and down. Generally looks awful on anyone but a model and even then it doesn't look that amazing. Think Victoria Beckham at the beginning of the Spice Girls.Technically it's called minimalism but we all know where we saw it first. I do love fashion but this is a trend I don't want to see. But, please feel free to argue against me!

Statement sunglasses and hats

I personally love a huge pair of sunglasses though for the past two summers they have been put aside for a generally more understated pair. I can't wait to get to get a new jumbo pair that will hide most of my face. The rule here is do think retro and preferably round or even with a bit of a cats eye thing going on. Again, sorry for the Posh Spice references but avoid the big black rectangular styles favoured by her a few years back. I love this pair by Karen Walker though coloured frames could be even better. Hat-wise consider donating your trilbies and panamas to your Dad for a while and dare to wear a bucket style, hugely wide brimmed floppy hat, or even better, a sombrero. I kid you not.

The 70's

We already saw a fair bit of this last year and the hats (above) already gave it away but expect the 70's to be the over-riding influence this year, more so than the more mid-century styles we saw last year. High-waisted mega flares, silk blouses, halter necks and maxi skirts and dresses should all be getting a lot of face time. Clompy clog sandals and buckle sandals for summer feet. Do think more 1973 resort that 1979 supermarket shopping.

Print and colour

Again, entirely connected to the above prints should be bold, bright and clashing or alternatively colour block to the extreme. 2011 is supposed to be a year of some seriously amazing colours and you're supposed to be combining them in ways Rothko and Newman would be extremely proud of. Pantone declared this years colour 'HoneySuckle pink' which is a kind of pinker shade of watermelon, add to this tangerine and a true turquoise. Darker jewel colours will also be popular particular citrine and ruby.

No print and no colour

If you're not one for colour a minimalist palette is also supposed to big news this year (though really when isn't it?). White especially is looking good, team with tans and various earth colours (see 2010). Texture though will be important, in either slinky luxe silk or pretty lace dresses in black or white. I for one will not really be too bothered with this. I love colour too much.

Additional notes

Heels should return to a stacked platform although the kitten heel is supposed to remain wafting around (boo).

Key accessories should include a silk scarf worn around your head, neck or hat.

Leather and studs are supposed to remain in Vogue.

Remember style doesn't change overnight so many of last years trends will still be valid.

I'm interested to know what you think will be big (or not) this year and if you have any personal style trends that you'll be adopting/carrying over. Personally I really want to run with the colours, especially pairing colour with colour and eliminating a lot of black or tan type combinations. I also want to start working more high quality fabrics in to my wardrobe because they really do look so much more amazing.

2010, The year in fashion

I've been looking forward to doing this post. While it's happening the year can all feel like a bit of a blur and there's nothing like a dash of retrospection to create a snap shot of the year that was. Fashion wise I found 2010 to be a great year (remember however that I am a fickle fashion victim), with a perfect balance of nostalgia, the new and the down right strange (Lady Gaga anyone?).

Here are my selection of defining fashion statements from 2010, the pieces and trends that really summed up the year.

2010 was rough for the lambs with shearling (sheepskin, preferably lambskin) as the material of the year. We saw shearling jackets, coats, waistcoats, hats, shoes and even socks. Regular leather continued it's reign as an all purpose fabric with the perfection ( and high street-isation) of the leather dress, skirt and t-shirt. Items that despite having all the potential to evoke The Flintstones or a biker gang actually are incredibly simple and beautiful. In saying that, most of us couldn't afford one and the 'vegan' versions = sweaty = not chic.

The biggest shock for me this year was the return and rise of the clogs. After my initial shock I was a little disgusted, then intrigued, then secretly fancied them and now I'm seeing in 2011 with 2 pairs of clogs at my side. I've been very impressed at the dramatic rise of the humble clog from Dutch national costume to clomping along the runway at Chanel but I'll admit it has made me a bit worried. Those clogs have potentially trod a dangerous path, a path in which such other non-flattering and scary shoes of years past can make an equally dramatic and successful comeback. Spice Girl platforms, I'm looking at you.

Perhaps less excitingly camel was most definitely the colour of the year (although Pantone declared it turquoise) with bright red a close second. A camel coat was the absolute must buy (you really should have already had one) though camel trousers as perfected by Chloe were also high on this list. This tone, ranging from beige through to caramel signalled a hiatus for black and 2010 embraced a lighter palette in general. Which is nice for a change, which is all it is. Black will be back. It always is.

Ultimately 2010 was a year of the mid-century flash back. Ladylike silhouettes, skinny waist belts, full skirts, pussy bows, blouses, red lips, proper handbags, kitten heels, peter pan collars and penny loafers were everywhere and should continue to be for a little while longer. Teal, merlot and rust were colours that featured a lot last year evocative as they are of early 60's cocktail dresses. In many ways 2010 wasn't a perfect year but this alone made it for me, finally a fashion trend that works quite perfectly with a big(ger?) bum.

So there are my fashion statements of the year that has been though I could go on. To me, it was a year of luxe and I hope that's here to stay for a while. Next post I'll share what the predictions are for this year. But until then how will you remember 2010?

happy christmas...

I’m sat having an easy thursday afternoon in my day job just waiting to hear if there are any last minute alt's to a branding job I have been squirreling away on. In an hour I break up for the Christmas holiday’s (my first time off in eight months). The office is closing until the end of January and I am taking a small break from ‘Dear Colleen’ to re charge my batteries. I've had an amazing five weeks in the run up to Christmas and did far more business than I ever dreamt I would - those who lived through it with me on twitter will quite rightly think I’m a total moaning mini but now I’m on the other side I can look back and say it has been amazing and once again this year I feel like I was chucked in the deep end and somehow didn’t drown.

It’s a funny thing facing Christmas alone on the wrong side of the world. For a start it’s pretty dam hot and sunny over here, which to my English brain just doesn’t make sense. More importantly I am just about as far away from my family as I can be, I feel a little sad about that but I’m mostly sorted and am looking forward to getting the day off to cycle, catch up with friends and relax. I also love to cook so will spend at least part of the day making lots of yummy food including the legendary pav, which I believe is the Kiwi Christmas desert of choice. I hope you all have lovely Christmases however you’re spending the day.

I just have a few people to thank who have gotten me through the last few weeks; Chris and Sandy my bosses at scooter design endlessly supportive and kind employers. My assistant Jen who filled in for me at the Auckland Art and Craft Fair at the drop of a hat and who has also helped me run a passable wholesale business. Evie for keeping this blog alive and putting together some fabulous articles with little or no guidance from me and finally I huge thank you to my brilliant Mother the most remarkable person I know, she has kindly managed my UK based Etsy shop and wholesale orders. She just got on with it, know what she was doing and made my life a lot easier. I couldn't have asked for more.

Christmas in New York

My guess writer Evie is just back from New York (lucky girl) so here's her top tips for a festive time in 'the city'...

I'm really lucky. I just got back from New York where I had a super time as both tourist and bargain hunter. As someone who resents having christmas in summer I loved the cold, short days, incredible Christmas displays and totally excessive use of fairy lights. I would recommend to everyone to save your pennies and try and visit NYC around Christmas at least once in your life. And so with no real theme in mind (hipster, budget, fashion) I restrained myself to suggest just 5 places you must visit. Luckily they're all free or inexpensive so that leaves money for spending on the good stuff!

1). Brave the crowds on 5th Avenue and the Rockerfeller Center. The Christmas decorations and window displays (particularly at Bergdorf Goodman pictured) are spectacular and you have to go and try on at least one pair of insanely expensive shoes. If you're brave (I wasn't) go in the morning when there aren't queues and go ice skating.

2). Eat at Five Guys. Traditional style burger joint, there are several as they are now a national chain but still feel like a one off place. Nothing flashy but the burgers and skin-on hand cut fries are incredible. Make sure to get ALL the toppings and I recommend getting takeaway and eating in private. It gets messy.

3). Visit the Guggenheim. NYC is full of amazing galleries and museums but to me the Guggenheim is the best. It's a stunning piece of architecture and such a clever layout. It's size and format means the exhibition is really well curated and entirely manageable. No art over-exposure or sore feet. I've been twice and loved it both times. Even non art lovers will be able to handle this one.

4). Go to Brooklyn, especially up to Williamsburg. If I went again I'd spend most of my time over there. It's too cool. It's so nice to get away from the noise of the city too. You must go to Beacons Closet (both of them) and Buffalo Exchange thrift shops, great pickings at fair prices just give yourself plenty of time and energy. Check out all the little shops you pass as well, especially on 5th Avenue in Brooklyn.

5). Ok I'm going to cheat on my 5 things and put two together. Go to Grand Central Station and just marvel at the ceiling. It's so pretty, plus you can stand there and think about all the movies that use it as a place to lose people (so if you're travelling with someone you want to ditch go here and run off). Finally, obviously you have to go to Central Park even (or especially) if it's snowing. It's a great place to people watch and see lots of pampered NY dogs and crazy dog walkers walking 12 dogs at once.

Now I'm really going to cheat and share just a couple of quirky shops you should checkout.

The Evolution Store in Soho, If you love Taxidermy, you'll love this place and The Mysterious Bookshop, a bookshop specialising in crimes and mysteries.

I was really lucky to get some great recommendations on where to go. Guide books are one thing but it means a whole lot more fun when you can get some real life tips from some like-minded people. So with that in mind please share your favourite places, shops, things to do and eateries in the comments.

While it's been a busy couple of weeks for me, this of cause has lots to do with the run up to Christmas and is also partly down to the fact I've been lucky enough to have myself and my work featured in a handful of rather cool places (mostly blogs) but I also did my first magazine interview with Homestyle. Thanks to Jessica from Foxes for scanning it in.

As for house keeping. Firstly Christmas posting dates, that's it for orders to the State and Canada the final guaranteed delivery date as been and gone - sorry. Our lovely neighbours in Australia still have until the 9 December to place orders and New Zealanders can wait until the 20 December to get their orders in. Also New Zealander might like to buy my items from Foxes or Felt as prices work out a little cheeper postage wise, plus Foxes have an exclusive line of 'Dear Colleen' items including the 'Skills' poster pinned above my desk in the photo.

I'm also showing at two fairs over the next couple of week - my assistant Jen is taking a big bag of goodies up to the Auckland Art and Craft Fair next saturday (so sorry that work commitments mean I'm unable to attend myself) and the week after I'm at the Christmas Craft2.0 at the New Dowse. I think this is likely to be my last outing in New Zealand so make sure you drop by to say hello if you're in Wellington that weekend.

Christmas knits...

Every Christmas I watch Bridget Jones. If DVD's were like books my copies of Bridget Jones would be a well thumbed, coffee stained penguin paperback. There is something about all that snow, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant that puts me in a festive mood. So when I thought about christmas sweaters (or jumpers, or pullovers) I instantly thought of Bridget and Mark Darcy in theirs. Any other time of year I would grimace at the sight of someone in a jumper like that but at christmas they are ok, they can even be kind of cool. However before you settle down in your knitted glory with some eggnog comfortable in the knowledge you're not completely breaking a fashion crime there are a couple of rules to follow.

His and Hers or in fact matching with anyone is still a big no-no. You may have christmas spirit but you have not lost (all of) your dignity.
Leave the flashing christmas tree earrings at home, or even better in the bin.
Snowflakes are best, seconded by deer. Anything with a smiley face comes last ie. reindeer with smiley face, christmas tree with smiley face, christmas pudding with smiley face.
You do not want to dress like a christmas pudding.

Now, there are two ways you can wear your christmas sweater effectively (although the second one is questionable):

1. Nonchalant hipster chic. Hipsters can enjoy christmas too. Look a bit cutesy and kitsch. Team a loose sweater with skinny jeans or tights and some big clumpy boots (engineers boots look good). Roll up your sleeves, roll up your jeans if you like. You can even have some holes in your jumper if you're into that. Make it look like it was your Dad's sweater and you just don't care. Curl up in the library or a cafe. Look cool. You may add a hat.

2. Snow bunny. It doesn't matter if it's not snowing just channel some Scandinavian vibes. This look is best pulled off with a longer knitted dress. Wear tights (or don't if you dare) and pixie boots, or elk fur boots and maybe an elk fur hat or ear muffs (not recommended for southern hemisphere). Wear some blush to give you that wind burn, cold air glow. Goggles are a nice touch. Look streamlined and sexy like a Bond girl, or better, a Bond villain.

If nothing else, Christmas is an opportunity to relax and indulge yourself and those you love. As adults we can (for the most part) choose the way we want our own Christmas to be whether that means embracing the traditions of your childhood or banishing them to the back of your memory and starting afresh. Christmas means different things to each of us, but at the very least it is the perfect opportunity to celebrate your hardwork, eat well and spend time with good friends and loved ones.

I wanted to put together a little fashion gift guide of handmade and designed items, leaving the chain stores out of it. Clothing is often an under-rated and/or badly chosen gift but it doesn't have to be. If you think you know a person and their style, don't be afraid to try and find something new for them. If sizing is what bothers you accessories are things that can be beautifully crafted and can make a really special gift. So long as you keep in mind the recipients style rather than your own you should be fine.

Of course no one says that you can't treat yourself at Christmas, so these selections are more than a bit self-indulgent (I'm definitely going to treat myself to those gold flats). 'What's in my bag' seems to be a popular theme on twitter and blogs right now and I think it's a smart little way to get a glimpse into someones life so I thought I would share. My bag is very empty today, but I've been totally honest - I've given my wallet it's own section as it's quite large and is hiding a lot of extra junk.

So here's a few pointless facts that you can find out about me; I have a large leather bag that my parents bought me for my birthday (some of you will have read about it here), I walk everywhere so I only use bags that you can wear across your body as everything else is a pain to fuss with- it has to be large as the more shit I do, the more shit I have to lug around with me.

I really do carry a notebook everywhere, I get through about one a fortnight. Currently I'm using the yellow 70's style MMMG one. Ideally I like lined or squared paper - plain paper freaks me out. I have a few bits of stock with me today some tea towels to drop into a shop for a wholesale order and a rosette to photograph. Under the rosette is one of the most important things in my life - my orders book. Every single order that I get goes into that book once I have completed the order I tick next to the name and write the date so I know when it was posted. Next to my order book you'll spy some make-up, yes I'm a little vain. I may have holes in my shoes but I wear Channel lipstick - if I was to hind anything it would be that I feel a little ashamed that I spend so much money on a bit of wax in a tube.

I always have my sunglasses on me, I find the sun unbelievably bright in New Zealand. And yes that's right I have two phones not because I'm a super important business woman it's just that my iPhone doesn't work as a phone outside of the UK so it's been down graded to an iPod touch and I have a rubbish little pay as you go. I'm not sure if you can make out my headphones but they're in a terrible state they're held together with japanese masking tape and super-glue. The rest is just bit's of scrap paper and post office receipts. For some reason I'm still carrying American dollars in my wallet - I keep thinking I'll be heading back through there soon so why take them out - but if I'm honest they do get in the way.

On a final note I've had another chair re-covered at es design - it's in their show room at the moment if you want to pop along to take a look. It's not as outlandish as my pink office chair but I think the blue velvet with the wood is so yummy and I have the perfect cushions in mind to make it a little more hip (the cushions on it aren't mine). I picked up the chair as part of a three piece set in the salvation army's a few months back, it was a utter steal. Two of my friend have taken the other pieces off my hands so we're all having them reupholstered in different fabrics - I'll try and get some pics to share as they get their's done.

I had a different post written for today but then carrying on from gratuitous Rob Ryan loveliness (below) I was directed to the Rob Ryan wedding dress. How have I never seen this before? It makes me want to get married… but to a paper groom.

The idea of a paper dress is an adorable concept that to me really signifies that link between the graphic and the fashion designer. Paper is so important to a designer and I personally think paper is just the most perfect material there is. (If you're having doubts about paper then you must check out the blog Upon a Fold). In another post I want to address more the connections and crossovers between these two design disciplines but for now I'm just going to share a few of my own favourite paper looks.

Theres not really much to say about paper dresses. They're just incredibly fun to look at. However something that should be taken from them is that if you can make a gown from toilet paper you can't blame your materials as an excuse for a shoddy design. (The pink and white designs above are all made from toilet paper... wow)

Speaking as someone who this year has made a paper dress I say everyone should relax, grab some newspaper and a stapler and go wild. Call it art therapy, real life Project Runway or just some crazy time. Paper is lovely and so is Haute Couture. Oh and of course a paper outfit wouldn't be complete without the paper shoes.

This is not the blog post I'm meant to be writing - but in the last week or so I've really started to think about the future, not the distant hover-skateboard future but next year. I haven't had a clear vision for myself or my business since starting 'Dear Colleen' it was more of a field of dreams philosophy, which to be fair isn't working out so badly but if I'm really going to turn this into something more then I have get my head round what I actually want.

One morning last week while looking at illustrator extraordinaire Rob Ryan's blog something just clicked and it became very clear than I want a studio, I used to collect pictures of desks but a desk isn't going to cut it anymore I want more space and space with room for screen printing facility. I'm also facing the very real and scary fact that i'm going to be working on 'Dear Colleen' full time before next year is through. I would say all the fear is met in equal part by incredible excitement but I'm definitely developing a knot in my tummy.

However I'll continue to take inspiration from Rob Ryan's amazing studio and shop shown above and Wellington furniture designer/maker Duncan Sargent who runs this workroom come shop (the red building also shown above), which I guess is more what I have in mind. I really do believe that knowing what you want is the hard bit, making it happen is just a case of one foot in front of other so I think it's nearly time for me to take the first step.

In the pre-Christmas rush of the craft market crush what is it that gets you and your stall noticed? With so many beautiful things and hoards of customers even the most exquisite products can sometimes get overlooked. It is so important that your products and more importantly your brand is looking it's best and that includes you. When people choose to buy handmade they have a connection to the person who made it and to them, you ARE your brand. Personal appearance is so important and the way you dress could change someones mood. Call me fickle but I've honestly been swayed many a time by an enthusiastic and well-dressed seller all because they inspired me.

I thought I would pick Jessica Whiting's brain on the topic as a seller, craft market veteran, Auckland Art & Craft Fair organiser, founder of Foxes shop of design & wonderment and all-round know-it-all in the NZ craft and indie design scene. Jess makes some great points on the role of personal style in handmade success…

I always try and wear something that someone I know (or stock) has made. I have an unhealthy obsession with brooches so I usually have one on. My favourites are a Dear Colleen custom black rosette with my name on it that she made for me earlier this year and some works from Cheek Pinchy — nearly every accessory on my dresser has been made by someone I know; I am so lucky to know so many clever and talented people! I think that it's important to practice what I preach; I always promote my artists works by showing that I genuinely do like what they make and buy it myself, I choose things for the store that I would like to own or already do own.

How important do you find what you wear to events? It's like being the lead in a play — which sounds so cheesy! But you are playing a character, you are your own brand and people need to instantly recognise that. At the same time, it's so easy as my work is me to a tee so it's not hard to dress as yourself! I do make a conscious effort though in my choices when I get up in the morning for a market or a publicity meeting; I may not be working in an office anymore or need my suits, but I still have to keep up appearances.

As a market organiser and longtime stall holder do you notice those that make an effort? Absolutely! Quite often I only deal with people via e-mail or phone, or you read their blog or shop their on-line store so there is minimal physical contact. When you finally meet that person in 'real life' you have sort of built them up in your mind and it can be quite strange when they look so different to what you expect! That's only happened to me a couple of times, I think that most indie designers or crafters are pretty open and honest about who they are and their appearance naturally reflects that.

Is there anyone you think of who really 'IS' their brand? I think that Gem and Nathan Speeden from Hunter Gatherer are an extension of their brand, but again that is because the brand came from them. They always look fantastic behind their table, totally at one with their work.

With all this in mind I've put together a couple of points to consider if you're wanting to brand yourself a little better at your next market or event.

Take a look at your display, who would you like to see standing behind it or (even better) what would make a great photo (your photo will inevitably be taken).
Interpret and reinterpret. It's not about being ridiculous you can be fashionable, stylish and comfortable and still be incredibly effective. For example if you sell children's toys, you don't need to stick one on your head, but think about the colours, the textures and the overall theme of your brand.
Practice what you preach. If you can, wear what you sell. Be inspirational. You wouldn't sell make-up with a bare face, the same rule applies here.
A market is a step away from reality: it is not an office. Shoppers aren't there because they have to be. They're there because they really want to be. It's a happy place, so have fun. Markets are full of visual delights, don't be afraid to be one of them yourself!

A smile goes miles (but you knew that).Because a picture speaks a thousand words (and I've already written about 1000 of them) I thought I'd finish up today with a bit of visual inspiration from one of this week's featured etsy sellers Shan Shan from TinyToadstool. Shan Shan has both a vintage shop and a handmade shop selling her (very cute) knitted accessories. However what really made me ooh and ahh was Shan Shan's personal style lookbooks. Her distinct, pretty style totally embodies TinyToadstool and visa versa, she really is her brand and it's addictive.

It's a personal choice as to how far you like to go with this, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on the subject (both buyers and sellers) and you can nominate your own best dressed too if you like.

Bridging the gap - Victoria n' Bird

Fashion is an art that combines design and craftsmanship seamlessly (now I've got the pun out of my system). A piece of fabric requires both designer and seamstress to evolve into fashion and in many ways a seamstress who cannot design is as lost as a designer who cannot sew and anyone who has ever watched an episode of Project Runway will know just how lost these people get.

There are people with wonderful ideas, and there are people with incredible practical skills, but without combination of the two, it is difficult to go out on your own into the world of fashion.

One person who has made this amalgamation is the lovely Amy from New Zealand-based label Victoria n' Bird. There were several reasons why I wanted to interview Amy this week. Firstly, she is really very lovely, but also because she is an incredibly successful one-girl operation. Amy has really set herself (and VnB) apart from many other makers of handmade clothing by having a clear and distinctive design aesthetic blended with a carefully edited collection. I wanted to know how she takes on both roles as maker and designer and what they both mean to her.

When and how did you get started?

I hadn’t done any serious sewing while at Uni so when I finished I got stuck in, being that I had just finished Uni and couldn’t just sit around sewing for myself all the time I thought I would also try and sell a couple of things on Trademe. They sold instantly so from there it sparked something fun and fabulous, I gained a bit of sewing confidence and a little business started. I sold on Trademe for a couple of years and slowly transitioned over to Etsy.

When you began did you have a clear idea of what your brand would be like or did it evolve?

It definitely evolved. At the start it was just about making clothing and less about the business as a whole. Things were mostly one-offs and I would let a garment be dictated by what fabric I had in stock: now the design comes first, fabric sourcing comes last. It may not be bold and extravagant but VnB has an aesthetic: ideas and garments now have to fit into that to make the cut.

Who do you have in mind when you are designing a piece?

Me mostly! Then variations in all directions of myself, whether it be someone with a different body shape, bolder clothes choices, less bold, in a different climate. Just a girl, a friend, a lady on the street! At the end of the day we’re not all that different, if I have a penchant for simple clothes with a touch of cute and a touch of vintage, chances are there will be bunches of other ladies who want the same thing.

Where would you like to be in five years time?

Just want it to be bigger and better. Sometimes it’s tricky juggling it with other parts of my working life but I don’t really want it to change in any big way so I just have to make small changes so it runs a lot smoother. It has changed a lot and I have learnt a bunch of lessons along the way. I am sure there are a lot more changes to come and lots left to learn. I have so many ideas in the pipeline, but it does take a wee while as a one-woman business with a to-do list to get them out of my head and out into the world. The possibilities of where VnB could go are part of the excitement to keep it going, who knows?!

Would you ever want to expand VnB so that you could employ others in the construction or is the making of each garment an important aspect of the business for you?

People are always suggesting I outsource my sewing. I even had someone outright laugh at me the other day when they heard that I made everything myself. I know VnB inside and out, it’s not what it’s about. It might be necessary somewhere down the track, who knows, but not for where VnB is right now. If it was all about how many garments I could make in a day I don’t think it would have lasted this long. I did fall into that mind state early on in the Trademe days, and it got miserable and tense pretty fast. The main hurdle with VnB is trying to explain it to others, a LOT of people don’t get it, it’s extremely personal and in business that is clearly frowned upon.

Is there a side to the business that you enjoy the most?

Getting to be myself all of the time... I am not trying to hide the person behind the label: it is what it is all about! I play quirky girl music while I sew, have dog chats, show off pieces I make to family, get grumpy, get excited - it’s 100% me. Then I get to sell this lovingly handmade piece of well-thought-out, well-made clothing to some other person somewhere else in the world, maybe down the road, maybe Paris, I mean come on, how cool is that?!

And, finally...

There is a level of stress and pressure to keep things running, but in the business of creativity, if that was all there was, it would fail miserably. VnB works (most of the time) because it is a perfect balance between personal Amy and business Amy and a perfect combination of the crafty/handmade and well thought out, designed and constructed garments.

Well last week was a personal take on the categorization of indie design and craft– as it was personal and as I’m a graphic designer it was looked at from that prospective. I think it’s fair to say that in my world things are a little more black and white – if you’re a graphic design using your skill set to make graphic design pieces independently it’s pretty clear cut that you’re an indie designer. Any way I digress, today I’m still looking at the topic of categorization and not because I’m obsessed with pigeon holing, it’s just that I feel I have been labeled already under craft and that this label is misleading and dishonest for the work I produce. In some disciplines and for some creative’s the labels of indie design and craft could both easy apply and still not tell the whole story. These subjects sit between the black and white, in the grey.

Fashion is a huge grey area and luckily Fridays post will be covering this in a lot more depth, so today I’m going to focus on the most saturated market in the ‘handmade’ arena – Jewelry. Firstly I would like to talk about the work of Megan Auman creator of the Cozy/Cuff shown about. The Cozy/Cuff is a coffee cup sleeve that doubles as a bracelet and vice versa, it has green cred as it saves you from using a cardboard sleeve on your take-away hot drinks and it’s (pardon the pun) handy because it’s easy to keep on your person, as well as being pretty to look at. Auman is what I would class as an indie designer – this is an ideas lead piece, it is laser cut by machine and although she may well do some hand finishing, it isn’t what you could traditionally call handmade and nor does it matter because that’s not the point of a design like this. It’s attractive, smart, functional and yet just like the next piece I’m going to look at still a piece of jewelry.

Clare Stoker is a maker at the other end of the jewelry spectrum – see above. It’s not that she hasn’t put thought into her work but she is clearly more engaged with the materiality and textures of her pieces than the pursuit of communicating a ‘new’ or ‘original’ idea. I can clearly see that her work is informed by a long history of arts and crafts and although modern it has a feel of celtic or medieval jewelry. Her work revels in showing the un-uniform marks made by the maker’s hand. The craft of making the item is integral to the finished look and feel of the piece. Her jewelry is beautiful because of her skills as a crafter.

Both Auman and Stoker could be called jewelers but the methods by which they make their work could put them into different categories when it comes to talking about indie design and craft. To make maters even more confusing there are also designer/makers who cross over into both camps, Andrew Lamb definitely fits this bill – work shown above. He designs and makes world-renowned jewelry inspired by his interest in Illusion and visual effects. He was so keen to trick the eye that he invented a new metal forging technique, which bonds together gold and silver wire meaning that his jewelry changes colour depending on the angle it is viewed from. He’s a man on a quest to create something new but he’s also a skilled maker, seeing his vision through from concept to carefully crafted finished piece.

Maybe makers like Lamb need a whole new category or maybe-hopefully their vision and work stands on it’s own. I think that’s an idea all us creative’s might aspire to, just being excepted and known for our work, but I fear human nature and Google tagging doesn’t quite work that way - not yet at least.

nostalgic fashion - mad men

A lot has been said about the fashions and style of Mad Men. Fashion-wise it is undoubtedly the most influential show around. At all of the major fashion weeks the 50's and 60's were heavily revived. Full skirts, penny loafers, head scarfs and pedal pushers walked down the runway, unapologetic of their nostalgic vibe.

In one way or another almost all design has some relation to the past. It's impossible not to. The influence of Mad Men on fashion, and the influence of fashion on Mad Men is kind of like that old chicken/egg conundrum (though obviously it was the egg, right?) so I've decided to not even try and approach that one. Instead I wanted to look at the styling in Mad Men and how that relates to a modern designer.

The attention to detail in Mad Men is outstanding, the characters aren't just dressed 'all 60's' instead they are entirely appropriate to the time, their means, personality and job. Sure as time went on it would be fun to dress Joan in the latest 60's fashions but it wouldn't be faithful to her. Joan is resolutely a 50's pin-up, she knows her style but is not interested in modern trends unlike Trudy Campbell (Joan and Trudy shown above). Every character has their own style (yes, even Peggy). Silver Fox Roger Sterling obviously knows how well his grey suits set off his hair and Pete Campbell seems assured that his (kind of hideous) blue suits set him apart in the office.

As a visual, as a brand and as characters Mad Men is nothing but utterly convincing because it conforms completely to the zeitgeist of that place and time.

However, if I was to take Joan, Betty and Trudy's wardrobes and recreate them and declare them a collection, because everyone loves Mad Men and the 60s etc, it would look weird and it would look wrong. I can say this with some experience after meeting someone who picked apart vintage dresses, made patterns and then remade them using other vintage fabrics, hung them, unpressed, in a musty store amongst real vintage pieces and charged $300 for them, it was so strange. Today in 2010 the zeitgeist is very different and whilst many of us are still influenced and totally in love with times past it's important to remember we are not in those times ourselves.

It is vital as a designer to understand your own zeitgeist and be able to reinterpret influences effectively. The past is constantly a major inspiration for modern fashion design (all types of design) but it is that ability to mould the past to fit the present that determines who is the designer and who is the person re-making old dresses.

So whether you're designing it or wearing it. Make your mark with your own style. You'd never catch Don Draper using an old idea now would you?

Love is a pretty strong word and not one I would often use for an object but I really do love the Olivetti Valentine typewriter. As of yet it is an unrequited love, I just admire it from a far and spend my spare time day-dreaming that some long lost relative will bequest me one in a will just because they know what an amazing home I would give it.

Like Mad Men the Valentine says something about the social shift that happened in the sixties, designed by Sottsass (with Perry A. King) at the end of this decade – the idea was to create an "anti-machine machine," for use anyplace but an office. As well as being light weight and very portable because of it’s plastic casing, it is vibrant and confident looking. The idea and the design effortlessly reflect the looser, fun loving and more casual approach to life and work that were forming at the time. For me this is always when design is at it’s best when it’s not only functional and beautiful but also completely embracing and help form the age it was created in.

I also have a second reason for loving the Valentine and that’s because my graphic design hero Alan Fletcher did the classic marketing campaign which comprised of the fabulous logo and poster (shown above) and also having hundreds of silk scarves printed with the brand and dropped from a plane alone the Riviera – promotion doesn’t get more glamorous than that.

Before I start writing about the whole gambit of Indie design I thought I should begin with what I know and that’s myself, so here’s a very personal take on what design is to me and what I think makes indie design different from craft.

I’m just crazy about Man Men from the minute I saw the first episode a couple of years ago I know I had just watched something very special. I love the same things as everyone else; the exquisite styling, the sharp and understated scripts, the well-placed looks, as well as the incredible way they document the social shifts that took place in the sixties. All of the above is hugely impressive but what I love most is the why they show creative thinking. I don’t know of any other example that better demonstrates commercial idea generation to a mainstream audience.

In the very first episode they showed Donald Draper the advertising mastermind sitting in a café scribbling on a napkin after having a conversation that triggered his imagination – I can’t tell you how many napkins, receipts and bus tickets are shoved into my sketch book because ideas never happen when I’m sat at my desk thinking about them. I wouldn’t dare say I’m like the great Don but I do see myself in the character of Peggy Olson not the way she looks or acts but she like me is an extroverted thinker, this means she thinks as she talks and I love watching her ideas grow as she speaks to her colleagues. I don’t find it easy explaining my creative skills, I don’t really have many but I am good and fast at coming up with ideas and in Mad Men while other do the drawings, take the photos and type the letters the people that come up with the concepts are the heroes’. This is a rare glimpse of a different way of being a creative.

So why am I talking so much about Mad Men and ideas and all that stuff. Well I have a theory that the big difference between a designer (or indie designer) and a crafter is whether the work is lead by ideas or technique. My work is lead by ideas, there for I am a designer. I care about it’s production but I don’t have to make it myself to feel like it’s mine. Where as the careful making of a piece by hand is of the most significance to a crafter. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying that creative thinking isn’t part of craft or that productions isn’t important to design, it’s a question of where the emphasis lays that’s key. Like most things it’s not clear-cut, black and white (I will explore this in more depth next week – work load permitting:). I do however believe this is an option for how we can define ourselves more clearly and it does once again highlight the issue faced by indie designers like myself working under the umbrella of ‘handmade’ ‘craft’. I wonder how many other indie designers get asked on a daily basis to talk about how they make their work, what there favorite materials are, the time each piece takes to create – all great questions for crafters. Because we - the indie designers - are currently hiding under someone else’s identity we’re talking in a language that isn't ours and it means that we’re not forming our own voice. We need to find the right questions to get the true answers.

Here in New Zealand (or Auckland at least) for the past week or so it has finally felt like spring is here and summer is fast approaching. Down under it's widely believed that we Antipodeans are seasons behind in fashion, we wear our northern friends' summer cast-offs and are happy with that. I for one am no longer that happy playing little sister to the rest of the world and settling for trend hand-me-downs. I've been thinking about this and quite frankly, there's no reason to, given that Spring collections are shown at New York, Paris, London and Milan fashion weeks in September. This gives us (weather dependent) a good couple of months to pick up some trends and run with them.

I'm looking at the recent collections shown in fashion week and thinking about how I can make them my own this summer. I can't afford to buy much (if any) designer, but the inspiration is endless and I have a clear vibe and palette in my mind to keep my eyes peeled for pieces that will be on trend. With S/S 11 still firmly tipping its hat (Fedora whatever) to the 60's, 70's and 80's it's well worth taking some time to scour the op shops, markets and vintage shops for the good stuff (start now, when everyone else is still looking for capes and shearling jackets).

Personally I'll be taking my cues from designers like Lauren Moffatt with her retro holiday feel, light palette, nipped in waists, obligatory summer stripes and well-fitting shorts. These outfits from her spring lookbook (the collection is entitled 'The Honeymooner and What She Packed', how lovely is that?) are what really got me thinking about summer.

Regardless of trends everyone has their own style and with skin-bearing summer it's always important to do your own thing and wear what you feel comfortable and good in. My summer must, must, must have is a pair of smart, lightweight shorts and some breton stripes (t-shirts, cardigan, anything). What will you be wearing this summer? (or next summer for those on the other side of the earth!)

introducing fashion friday

I'm very pleased to bring you Evie Kemps first ‘Fashion Friday’. I wanted to get Evie onboard for a few reasons; firstly once I decided to change the content of this blog to focus on indie design I know it would be important to introduce fashion into the debate. I see fashion as the best example of art, design and craft all meeting to form an industry. I also believe fashion to be the most universally understood and spoken about creative art. Like it or not fashion touches your life and shows a form of creative self-expression. Sadly despite understanding the importantance of fashion I really don’t have much know-how, enter Evie. Over the past few months I’ve been I silent visitor to Miss Kemps own blog finding it a useful place to pick up snip bits of style info. It’s hard to find fashion writing that’s inclusive rather that elitist – Even though Evie often looks at high-end designers she does this with a charming and warm girl next-door perspective. I’m frilled to bring this perspective to my blog, so without further ado I’ll let Evie introduce herself.

Hello! I'm Evie, and I'm going to be writing on fashion here every Friday. Writing this weekly post is something I'm really excited about. I’m looking forward to seeing this blog move forward. I jumped at the opportunity to put something together but admittedly am sitting here biting my lip and worrying about what to write.

So, I'll start with the basics, I am not a fashion designer in any shape or form. I'm a fashion lover, spectator and a chronic shopper. I'm 23 and live in a little cottage in Auckland, NZ with my boyfriend Sam and our two dogs Bonnie & Jasper. I'm loath to take photos of myself so a myspacey mugshot is the best I can do. I follow more blogs than I can handle, and buy more shoes than I can wear (I have blisters today, naturally). I suppose first and foremost I'd consider myself an illustrator, but really I like to try my hand at everything. Fashion is absolutely my most favourite thing, I love to look at it, read about it, buy it and talk about it. I recently left my job to pursue more fun and exciting things and this blog is one of them.

Friday's emphasis will be on the independent designer and fashion scene in all its forms. I'll be mixing it up with some interviews, tips, trends, how-to's and of course lots of gorgeous clothes (not forgetting accessories). I'll state here and now, these Fridays are not about sewing but fashion and it's design. I'll expand on this more next week but hopefully that's a good starting point of what to expect!

let’s call a spade a spade

I’m two days late in publishing this article for once not because I couldn’t make the time it’s just that I keep writing and rewriting this piece trying to perfectly articulate what I’m trying to say. I’ve decided that rather than writing everything I’m going to try and say it as simply as possible and then go into finer detail over the coming weeks hopefully with some feed back from anyone good enough to read this.

Well I’m coming out! I’m not a crafter, I’m a designer - this is the word I would use first and foremost to discribe myself. It’s not just a job it’s who I am. When I look around this world I see the marks of designers everywhere; in the cloths we wear, in buildings, in cars, even the way the streets are laid out. Being a designer is not a very tangible thing – us designers often spend a lot of time thinking, planning and laying the groundwork for others to go and do. We rarely physically produce anything ourselves – for example an architect doesn’t build the skyscraper.

This is why I’ve be feeling some what uncomfortable ever since I opened my online shop selling in a handmade market place because I really don’t hand make. If I had to pigeon hole myself I would say I’m an indie designer – this term simply means that I’m a designer who works independently from any clients or companies. I would also say that a good percentage of the sellers on etsy are in fact indie designers as well. I have nothing against craft and I can also see that there are grey areas between the two, just like there are grey areas between craft and art or art and design. What I do take objection to is how weak us indie designers seem to be at flying our own flag and that’s what I’m aiming to address from now on. I want to make this a space to showcase, debate and just be proud of the best in indie design. In the coming weeks I will look at the grey areas, the ethics and the skills displayed by indie designers.

Mondays will be an article day looking at and debating all things Indie design. Wednesdays will be the show case day featuring and sometimes interviewing designers. Finally I'm very excited to be introducing Evie Kemp who’s going to be writing a fashion Friday slot - sorry I've moved it a day Evie:)

This is a huge undertaking for me as I barely have any spare time as it is, not to mention that I'm hopelessly dyslexic but I deeply believe it’s important to make a space purely dedicated to and for indie design.

Well it feels like I’ve spent the last few months in limbo. I was quite firmly forming a plan to travel home to England via lots of interesting places and stopping by lovely craft fairs as I travelled, when an offer landed on my desk that I couldn’t turn down – I haven’t been publicly talking about this yet because, well I’ve been waiting for things to sure up. I still can’t really say what the project is but I do need to remain in New Zealand to be part of it and for me to remain in New Zealand has been a bit of a mission.

Getting my twelve-month work visa was so simple that I naively thought extending it would be just as straight forward. I thought wrong, to extend my visa I’ve literally had to give blood as well as get poked, prodded, interviewed and x-rayed. It took around a month to do all the medicals and pull the relevant paper work together and then I had to wait a further five weeks before finding out the good news, I’m clear to stay for another eleven months. I’m not planning to stay for all of that time but as I’ve found out it’s not worth making plans, I’m sure there’s a John Lennon quote I should insert here.

Well I’m talking about change a few things are changing with my business as well; it’s about to double in size as I introduce Jen who’s joining me part time to handle the retail and wholesale side of things. Once I get her up and running this will be a huge help and relief. I’m also very excited about some changes that are happening right here on my blog. I have another helper starting with me next week who will be writing a guess post every Thursday. I'm putting in place a new agenda and structure and although it's not my aim to become the next Design Sponge* I am determined to make this an informative site and a site that's about more than just my work. If you want to find out about it all join me on Monday when I'll explain.

I know it's only September but as I'm based in New Zealand and send a lot of mail to the United States and Europe I wanted to get the postal dates listed early, the deadlines aren't as far away as you may think! I'm sure there will be a bit of wiggle room but the dates below are the final dates that NZ mail will guaranty delivery. Click here for a larger image...

It's not up in my shop yet but I will also be adding a gift wrapping and Christmas card service. So you can send a gift with a message directly to your loved ones. There will be a tiny charge but just to cover materials it's likely to end up as $2.50 (US), which isn't so bad for a hand written card and gift wrap. Well that's enough Christmas chatter for the time being, it's just that it's my first one as a seller and I want to get my bases covered:)

Just a little post to mention that some of the nice folks on felt have put together a little shop to rise funds for the Canterbury earthquake that hit the south island of New Zealand last week. I haven't been able to do much, I donated a couple of small items but that's nothing compared to the time and effort that the organizers have put in to getting it up and running.

Please take five minutes to have a quick look around the shop - how often do you get to donate and get a lovely items for your troubles. I believe the funds are going the New Zealand Red Cross.

Ok here's your chance to get your hands on a dishes tea towel all you have to do is give me a little help. I'm putting together a few new designs and I want to add a new Dishes tea towel to my line - this one I'm tentatively calling the mums or rom-com addition. I watched the eighties coming of age brat pack classic St Elmo's Fire yesterday. I've seen this film once before when I was fifteen and it made quite an impression on me. It was funny watching it again as a grown up with a whole different view of the world. I thought it would be fun to play a little game of now and then - or rather then and now.I guess the big difference is when I first saw it they seemed like role models, now they seem like spoilt kids, which of cause is the point. Then I thought the shy sweet 'Wendy' and the pretty party boy Billy should get marry and live happily ever after - now I can see that Billy not that respectful of women. I'm not at all sure why I couldn't spot that at the time.
The story threads about Kirby (Emilio Estevez) one of the leading male characters developing an obsession with a woman he met in college (Andie MacDewell). When I was fifteen I thought he was amazing, romantic and didn't understand why she didn't fall for him - now I think he's a stalker. Really what was wrong with my view of men at fifteen.
Then (about 1995) I thought the fashion was dated - now I think their bang on, boy the circle of fashion is a funny old thing. I found myself watching it yesterday in nearly the same outfit as Alec Newbury (Judd Nelson) minus the dressing-gown (as shown above).The one thing that really made an impression on me and I still pretty much feel the same about was the apartment of the main couple. I have never forgotten the amazing huge photo wall, like having a billboard in you living room I wanted one then and I would still love one now. I also like/liked the white walled open plan space. At the time it was my dream home and you know what it still pretty much is but maybe without quite so many glass bricks.

night bus

I'm just home from a brief evening of babysitting the twits out in the berbs of Wellington, this meant I got the bus home. It's been a while since I've been on a night bus on a saturday evening and it was an interesting ride, which included a very drunk couple ringing the bell every minute then asking the driver if it was their stop, yet never saying what stop they wanted. A drunk man falling asleep on my shoulder. A drunk man with a stinking old tissues who wiped it carefully all journey on the hand rile - nice and a drunk (are you seeing the common theme here) lady with her skirt tucked in her knickers. I'm guessing it would have seemed a lot more fun if I had also been drunk but sadly I wasn't maybe next time I'll except the money for a taxi back.
I'm still young(ish), single and outgoing so you would think I would be dieing to be on the town but no not me I'm so glad to be home and ready to curl up in bed, which incidentally has the loveliest quilt, the only big thing I bought in the states. It's from Anthropologie and is so beautiful that I traveled miles out of my way to buy a bag to carry it to New Zealand in and half killed myself carting it all the way across San Fransisco. The picture above isn't the exact one but it's close and isn't that bed wonderful, I want.
